Minke Whale Expeditions on the Undersea Explorer

How you can help

Undersea Explorer's Minke Research Program is funded by adventure diving tourism and benefactor support, allowing the permanent employment of marine scientists and to provide berth space, equipment and funding for external scientists onboard Undersea Explorer.

Since 1995 Undersea Explorer has facilitated hundreds of hours of in-water and surface observations of Dwarf Minke Whales - resulting in detailed movement, behaviour and size estimation records of the whales.

The Research Program obtained the first recorded vocalization of this species, which has assisted in acoustic tracking of the minkes. During the expeditions, individual whales are identified by colour patterns on the body, scars and other unique features, and resightings of known animals have occurred from days apart to two years later.

Trip dates: Mid June to July, 6 days/6 nights
14 dives minimum plus whale snorkelling

On these expeditions you not only dive the Ribbon Reefs but have the added bonus of  encounters with Dwarf Minke Whales. Through years of experience and research the world's dwarf minke whale expert team can offer you the ultimate 'in-water' whale encounters as no other organisation can. Scheduled Ribbon Reef dives will be replaced by whale watching and snorkelling experiences and dives may be reduced from 4 to 2 per day, depending on the number and length of time of interactions with the whales.
Research experiences include:

  • Documenting whale encounters, often with multiple whales for many hours

  • Recording, hearing and feeling whale vocalisations

  • Creating and updating a photo and video identification database

  • Researching whale and human interactions

This is a trip for the whole family as we are joined by some of the world's leading whale experts, providing a truly unique experience.
