Work by Jason Gedamke on Undersea Explorer has clearly documented the sounds produced by dwarf minke whales. Most are low frequency grunts, belches and moans which can be heard clearly by swimmers if they put their head underwater and displace the air from their outer ear.

A very distinctive, and more controversial, sound involves 3 short pulses, followed by a slight upsweep (the 'Star Wars' sound). This sound had been recorded before by other researchers; it was nicknamed the 'Banjofish', but was not linked to any animal.

The acoustic aspect of the project has some fabulous recordings and is the first positive recording of the dwarf minke whale. A range of sounds are produced and include the  'star wars' vocalisation.

The two methods of recording and tracking. The sounds are recorded via an array of hydrophones which is synchronized with surface observations and video recordings.

Monitoring hydrophones onboard

Above by hydrophone array off the Undersea Explorer - 4 x 800ft (250mtr) extensions each with multiple hydrophones attached sounding at a depth of 3 mtrs.
